Vappu in Helsinki runs on Thursday April 30 and Friday May 1 in 2026, with the classic Havis Amanda cap ceremony and Kaivopuisto/Ullanlinnanmäki picnic both explicitly listed for this year.
Vappu 2026 basics

In 2026, Vappu in Helsinki falls on Thursday 30 April (Vappuaatto / May Day Eve) and Friday 1 May (Vappupäivä / May Day). Helsinki’s official event listings describe it as the city’s major spring carnival, centered on student traditions, workers’ celebrations, and citywide partying. Drunken debauchery & one night stands would be another way to describe it. An annual two-day spring explosion of student caps, street crowds, picnics, bubbles, parades, and questionable life choices made in broad daylight is probably a fair an accurate description the board of tourism would be willing to accept.

For the tourists is till worthwhile noting two of most recognizable Helsinki traditions are already confirmed for 2026: on 30 April, crowds gather at Market Square / Kauppatori for the Havis Amanda (“Manta”) cap ceremony, and on 1 May, people head to Kaivopuisto and Ullanlinnanmäki for the huge picnic-and-sparkling-wine ritual. Both good fun.
Brunch on Vappu day is also a in demand event, and available tables in restaurants may be scarce.

The weather somehow too often turns from what has been promising sunny & warm spring weather earlier the same week into a made-for-crowd control cold and wet late winter weather.( There’s more than enough room for a conspiracy theory there if you ask us).

For this year’s Manta ceremony, Helsingin yliopiston ylioppilaskunta (HYY) says the public program starts at 16:00, the statue wash is at 17:00, and the actual crowning is at 18:00 on 30 April 2026. If you are interested in experiencing this event, you better arrive early.

Often Vappu is best experienced by keeping things simple: Your basic set of alcohol 2-3 winnes anda pocket size bottle of spirits + 1 bottle of champagne is the normal Finnish minimum requirement. Clear you calendar for the next 2 days. Purchase also 1-2 helium filled balloons and wrap some serpentine round your neck.

• Havis Amanda / Manta cap ceremony

  • This is the classic Helsinki kickoff and the most photogenic Vappu moment in the city.
• Citywide Vappu street celebration
  • When: 30 April–1 May 2026
  • Where: across Helsinki
• MyHelsinki’s official Vappu listing says the celebration continues around the city after the cap ceremony, with parades and other public events.
• Kaivopuisto and Ullanlinnanmäki Vappu picnic
  • When: Fri 1 May 2026, mainly late morning into afternoon
  • Where: Kaivopuisto and Ullanlinnanmäki
  • This is the other essential Helsinki Vappu scene: people bring picnic setups, sparkling wine, balloons, and varying levels of dignity. MyHelsinki explicitly names these parks for the 2026 celebration.
• Helsinki workers’ Vappu parade and celebration
  • When: Fri 1 May 2026
  • Where: formation at Hakaniementori from 11:00, route to Kansalaistori
  • One of the largest traditional May Day processions in the city. Good article material if you want to mention Vappu’s workers’ roots, not just the champagne-soaked student side.

  • Paasitorni is promoting a traditional Vappu program with music, singing, food, and spring celebration in a historic setting. Their separate Vappulounas is listed for 1 May, 12:00–16:00.
• HKO Vappumatinea
  • When: Fri 1 May 2026, concert listings show a 12:00–13:00 performance and streaming/info around 14:00
  • Where: Musiikkitalo, Mannerheimintie 13a
  • A cultural contrast to the picnic chaos. The Helsinki City Orchestra’s Vappumatinea is very much part of Helsinki’s traditional Vappu mood.

Once the day turn to night the party continues at Crystal Show Club. Justa 5 minute walk from teh city center its accessible and that party goes on until 5AM.
