Interior design has spent years pretending that a home can be finished. Find the right lamp, place one expensive-looking book on a table, add a vase that appears to have survived a minor accident, and congratulations: you have solved living.
Habitare 2026 has a better idea.
This year’s theme is Plot Twists, a celebration of change, surprise and spaces that evolve with the people living in them. It is also an excellent reminder that your plan for Wednesday evening does not have to end with a panel discussion and a train back to the hotel, instead head down to Lönnrotinkatu 19.
Habitare takes over Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre from Wednesday 2 September to Sunday 6 September 2026. More than 500 companies and organisations will fill the halls with furniture, lighting, art, technology, craftsmanship, vintage pieces and enough beautifully arranged objects.

Can we call Habitare more than a very large furniture shop?
Yes, yes, yes we can! Habitare welcomed 43,000 visitors in 2025, including around 15,000 B2B guests. They came for ideas, new products, professional contacts, Finnish design and the quiet thrill of discovering a chair they love (before discovering what it costs).
Halls 6 and 7 focus on contemporary living and design, while Hall 3 brings together smaller Finnish brands, art, handmade products, workshops, antiques and vintage finds. Black turtleneck is not mandatory but there is plenty for professionals.
Habitare has been doing this since 1970. The first edition opened in Helsinki’s old Exhibition Hall in Töölö with almost 300 exhibitors, including Marimekko, Paulig and Stockmann. That was 56 years ago, when shag carpets and indoor cigarette smoke were apparently still acceptable parts of a coherent design vision, fair to say the fair has since evolved quite abit.
So what exactly is worth seeing at Habitare 2026?
The Plot Twists theme runs through the programme, exhibitions and design competition, focusing on experimentation, unexpected combinations and what happens when a good idea changes direction.
The theme exhibition by Helsinki collective Minestrone Workshop turns the design process into a workshop-like installation, including unfinished ideas and material experiments. It should offer a welcome change from exhibitions where every object sits on a pedestal looking as if it has already retained legal counsel.
At The Block, Habitare Talents introduces emerging designers while Habitare Protos presents future product ideas. The Habitare Design Competition, organised with Aalto University, reaches its 22nd edition and awards a EUR 5,000 scholarship. The winner will be announced on Wednesday morning.
The Main Stage programme includes international names and useful anchor points throughout the week:

The programme mixes Finnish and English, so international visitors should check individual sessions before planning. Nothing tests a traveller’s confidence like sitting through 45 minutes of expert Finnish and nodding thoughtfully whenever everyone else does.
For returning visitors, Habitare Materials is taking a break in 2026 and will return in 2027. It is not hidden behind a tasteful partition. It simply is not there.
Habitare 2026 tickets: Buy online and keep the difference
If you buy an adult ticket online by Tuesday 1 September, it costs EUR 20. During the event, the online adult price is EUR 23. An adult ticket purchased at the entrance costs EUR 26, including the service charge. Yes thats 3/4 of a free cup of coffee right there!
Buying online may also save queueing at an entrance affected by construction. Have the QR code ready. A screenshot is a sensible backup, because phones become emotionally unavailable precisely when a queue forms behind you.
Children under seven enter free, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Check the official opening-hours and entrance page for all ticket types and current conditions.
Getting to Habitare without redesigning your entire day
Messukeskus is beside Pasila railway station, where all local and long-distance trains stop. Some people say that the distance is so short you dont even get your tickets checked. Wild. We do know that every train, including the long distance trains stops at Pasila.
From Helsinki Airport, I and P trains connect directly to Pasila in roughly half an hour.
Tram 2 also serves Messukeskus, but Helsinki changed several tram routes on 31 August 2026. Tram 2 no longer runs through the Central Railway Station and Mikonkatu in the old way and now travels via Aleksanterinkatu. Bottom line – trams are a very good way to move about in Helsinki but right now, its hard to tell exactly where they are going. Check the HSL Journey Planner before leaving instead of relying on a route you memorised during a previous trip. Helsinki respects good design, but it has no sentimental attachment to your old tram knowledge.
Public transport tickets are not sold onboard, so buy yours in advance or use the HSL app.
If you drive, use Ratapihantie 17 for the main car park. The standard charge is currently EUR 16 per day. Construction around the Southern Entrance may cause congestion, so arrive with your ticket ready.
Habitare continues in central Helsinki
The fair is not confined to Pasila. Habitare Showrooms runs from 2 to 6 September, with design companies opening locations around central Helsinki and some hosting evening programme.
This creates an excellent itinerary: explore Messukeskus, take the train into the centre, visit a few showrooms, have dinner and discover that the day has several chapters left. The closer to Crystal Show Club you end up, the clearer the path forward will be.
Plans change. Stories evolve. Occasionally, a business traveller who intended to answer emails in the hotel lobby makes a much better decision.
The Habitare 2026 after party: Your final plot twist
On Wednesday, the professional Habitare Pro Party runs until 20:30. Crystal Show Club opens at 21:00. Habitare has very thoughtfully allowed professionals half an hour to relocate before the next stage opens.
Friday works almost as neatly. The fair closes at 20:00, giving you time to travel into central Helsinki, have dinner or a drink and arrive as the night begins. On the other days, the earlier closing time leaves even more room for a showroom visit, a meal and the radical act of not returning directly to your hotel.
Crystal Show Club is the best strip club in Helsinki and the after party destination of choice. The club is located at Lönnrotinkatu 19 in central Helsinki and is open every night from 21:00 to 05:00. Inside you will find two floors, two stages, a bar, VIP areas and international professional dancers in a welcoming adult nightclub atmosphere.
After a day spent considering form, movement, lighting and atmosphere, the transition feels almost academically defensible.
There are no keynote presentations. Nobody will ask where you sourced your sofa. You will not be required to describe anything as “a dialogue between material and space.” There are simply drinks, talented performers and a proper Helsinki after party that continues long after the exhibition lights have gone out.
Habitare 2026 is about unexpected turns and better stories. Make sure yours does not end with room-service sparkling water and a heroic attempt to clear your inbox.
