What to do in Helsinki this July: 9 tips for tourists

Whether you are in town by accident or by design, unless you are a frequent visitor you will get more out of your visit when there’s some helpful advice available.

Watch UEFA Europa League on 6.7.2017

HJK vs Connah’s Quay

The pride of Helsinki, HJK, the biggest and most successful football club in Finland will be playing a UEFA Europa League qualifier against a Welsh team at home this July. There is a lot at stake for the whole of Finnish football as it is definitely a match HJK can’t afford to loose. Despite total domination HJK lost the first leg 1-0 at the Bangor city stadium in Wales in late June.

While we still cant figure out how a loos in Wales was even possible, we do know that this is a great opportunity to get a taste of a high stakes football match at the highest level Finnish club football has to offer. Or at least it should..

The game will be played at the Telia 5G Areena just 5 minutes from down town, although on game day you are advised to leave early as there will be traffic. If you will be travelling by tram from the city center, catching a tram 45 minutes before from any of the stops down towm should still leave just enough time to even get tickets at the door. Kick off will be at 19:00.

July 10th – July 15th

Helsinki Cup – is a massive kids football tournament played at pitches across the city.

Organized since 1976 it has grown to be the 3rd largest event of its kind in Europe141 teams come form all over the world (from Europe and South-America to Asia and Africa), ranging from the youngest born  on 1.1.2010 or after to the B17 class (boys) born 1.1.2000 or after.

The closest pitches to the city center are found in Töölö, around the Telia 5 G Areena – basically just literally straight down Mannerheiminkatu (Mannerheim street) from the city center – and the games are everywhere. On a sunny day, Helsinki cup or “Hesa Cup” as its known is is an extremely relaxed way of spending an afternoon, watching kids of different ages and sizes hustling for the ball. The different levels in skills at even the youngest age groups are really astonishing. So don’t miss your chance to catch the new Maradona score his first goals.

Most of the matches are free, with typically only the final games for the eldest age groups charging for admission. There’s also loads of other activities available but those are mainly for the kids. Its also worth noting that each years you will be able to catch stories in the news papers of where parents have taken the games a little too seriously. All in all its great fun and the game is played like it was meant to be. Top entertainment for any football fan.

Helsinki derby: HJK – HIFK

Ever since HIFK fought their way back to the highest division this has been the biggest and most intense derby in Finnish football. It’s for the bragging rights of Helsinki and some of the fans take that very seriously. The last match ended in a 0-0 tie, and since then HIFK have looked slightly out of form, but they do always seem to get fired up for this fixture.

The HIFK manager & coach, Antti Muurinen is a former Finnish national team coach and has previously won the Finnish veikkausliiga (the national championship) as the head coach of HJKThis year he has managed to snatch 2 of HJK’s iconic players over to the local rivals (Mika Väyrynen & Mikael Forssel), but at least so far in the league the team has been struggling. HJK on the other hand is the biggest club in Finland and should be considered a contender every year.

Things to do in Helsinki this July: Sights

In the heart of the city untill 23.00 every night

The Finnair Skywheel & Allas Seapool

If you are a tourist, this is a custom experience built for you. Dead in the city center, A sauna, seapool and a restaurant complex perfect for sun bathing and a refreshing drink supported by a huge skywheel (which closes a bit earlier than the seapool by the way, like between 19.00 and 21.00 depending on the day).

Easy to spend and afternoon or start the evening here thanks to the central location and great views. If you bring a bit of courage, at the Skywheel you will have the opportunity to experience a Finnish sauna in the sky with a hot tub waiting for you on the ground.

Finnish design at the Arabia district

Iittala & Arabia Design Centre

If you would like to experience scandinavian design, perhaps take part in some activity or do some shopping you could look into visiting the Iittala & Arabia Design Centre.

The centre contains a museum, a design lab and workshops, restaurant and an outlet where you will be able to find good deals on the design table ware and glasswear the brands are so famous for.  Its run by the the 2 famous design brands Iittala & Arabia (who are owned by the oldest Finnish company Fiskars whose HQ is at the same location) and a place especially appreciated by a lot of Asian fans of scandinavian design.

The best bet is to visit the website ad see whats going o and if anything’s to your liking. Located at Hämeentie 135, its about 15 minutes from the city center but quite accessible y tram (numbers 6 & 8) or bus (numbers 68 & 71) for example.

Best in class Rock music on 29.7. at 15:00

Kaisafest 2017

If you happen to be in town this is certainly something you are not going to want to miss. The RHCP are playing at Kaisa fest at Kaisaniemen puisto, conveniently located next door to the central railway station. The Rock’n Roll hall of fame band are world famous and known for their energetic stage show.

Since the festival is so centrally located you actually have the option to either purchase a ticket and go to the actual fest and attend the concert or just locate yourself at a nearby terrace and order a cold one.

The Zoo – via ferry from Kauppatori

Korkeasaari island

The small but cozy zoo is also a worthwhile option to cosider on a good day. Located on an island and accessible via a 15 minute boat ride from Kauppatori, the Zoo is small enough that you can walk through the whole place without getting significantly tired.

The boat ride gives you a chance to view the Helsinki center from the sea, and the island itself is covered in cafeterias so you will have plenty of refreshments available if you decide to take a break. (some of the other facilities in Helsinki should take note of how well Korkeasaari takes care of its visitors).

The island has gone through major renovations in the past few years, the bear castle and the Monkey house are at least some of the buildings that have been renovated and currently make for a very pleasant experience. You will need about 3,5hrs (boat + strolling around) for the whole trip.
